Training for Adults & Youth

Adults - Are You New To Scouting?

Cub Scouts:

  1. Download the MyScouting App to take Youth Protection Training (required for registration) or create an account online here MyScouting.org
  2. Check out these additional online resources for Den Leaders in English and Spanish on BSA's policiies on how to proect youth from emotional, physical and sexual abuse here.
  3. Take "THIS IS SCOUTING" an online course that introduces new adult leaders to scouting at MyScouting.org
  4. FAST START (Den Leaders, Cubmaster, Pack Committee and Committee Chair) - These courses give a quick orientation to your specific level in Scouting. They are intended to provide the basic concepts of Scouting. Offered online at MyScouting.org
  5. Cub Scout Leader Specific Training (Committee, Tiger, Wolf/Bear, Webelos, Cubmaster)
    These courses are designed to prepare the Den Leader for the upcoming year. Many Dens spread the leadership responsibilities to all the parents, so these courses are good for any parent of a Cub Scout. It is offered online at MyScouting.org.  Blackland Prairie offers a classroom version of Cub Scout Leader Specific Training which allows you to form relationships with other adult volunteers and gather resources.
  6. BALOO – Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation
    This course is an introduction to Cub Pack Outdoor Camping. One adult from each Pack is required to have BALOO Training for the Pack to go camping. BP offers outdoor training each fall.
  7. OWL – Outdoor Webelos Leader Training
    This course covers the essentials for camping with Webelo Scouts. This is a weekend course designed to allow the participants to experience the outdoors, Webelos style.

Boy Scouts:

  1. Youth Protection, Fast Start, This is Scouting and Leader Specific Training are the basic courses that every adult leader should have within 90 days of registering as a Scout Leader. These courses are now mandatory for all leaders who work with boys as of Jan 1, 2011. See steps 1 through 4 above. MyScouting.org
  2. Boy Scout Leader Specific Training (Committee and/or Scoutmaster/Assistant SM)
    Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster: This is the first of a two part course. Topics covered include leadership styles, youth leadership development, patrol leaders' council, teaching Scouting skills, the Scoutmaster's conference, and growing the troop. Prerequisites are "This is Scouting", Fast Start' and Youth Protection. To be considered "Trained," parts I and II are required along with Fast Start, This is Scouting and Youth Protection". Check out University of Scouting or Council's annual Train-O-Ree to take these classes.
  3. Committee: This training course ensures you understand the roles and responsibilities of each troop committee member. It is a team-building experience ideal for the whole committee. Click the list to the left for information on the District-wide training course, or take it online (preferably, together as a whole committee) at MyScouting.org
  4. IOLS –Boy Scout Outdoor Leader Training (for any Leader who will work with Scouts).
    This is the second part of Leader Specific Training-SM/Assistant SM. It is an adult leader course that uses the Patrol Method to teach the same outdoor skills taught to the Scouts as they progress from Tenderfoot to First Class. This course involves a weekend of camping with the Patrols established during the Leader Specific Training-SM/Assistant SM.
    Prerequisites are "This is Scouting", Fast Start' and Youth Protection. To be considered "Trained," parts I and II are required along with Fast Start, This is Scouting and Youth Protection".

Venturing:

  1. Venture YPT - Required to work with our youth, go to MyScouting.org and take online.
  2. Venture Leader Specific Training
    This course covers specific information about the Venturing Program: goals, aims, organization, finances and resources available. While many adults are involved in helping Venturing Crews, technically there are no adult leaders in Venturing.  MyScouting.org

Supplemental Training Courses

  • Backcountry Advanced Training
    This course consists of two evening and and one weekend camping program designed to teach vital skills for high adventure bound leaders and seasoned scouts. It's ideal for troops and crews planning and preparing a high adventure trek to Philmont or anywhere else. 
  • Weather
    One adult from each unit must have taken this course before the unit will be allowed to obtain a tour permit for overnight camping. Offered online at myscouting.org.
  • Safety Afloat
    One adult from each unit must have taken this course before the unit will be allowed to obtain a tour permit for any boating activities. Offered online at MyScouting.org.
  • Safe Swim Defense
    One adult from each unit must have taken this course before the unit will be allowed to obtain a tour permit for any swimming activities. Offered online at MyScouting.org.
  • Climb on Safely
    This course covers the basics in how a scouting unit can carry out a safe climbing/repelling activity. Offered online at MyScouting.org.
  • Merit Badge Counselor Training
    Training for adults who wish to serve as merit badge counselors. Qualifications, registration and procedures will be covered. Check out University of Scouting
  • Shooting Sports
    Each Unit should have at least a Range Safety Officer (RSO) in order to help staff District events at the BB Gun, Archery or Rifle ranges. Check out the shooting sports requirements and training classes offered by Circle Ten Council here.
  • Climbing Sports - COPE and Climbing Tower Instructor offered by Circle Ten Council here.

Course Descriptions - Youth

Den Chief Training
The Den Chief is a critical member of the Scouting Leadership Team. Den Chief Training is intended to build enthusiasm for the job and teach the skills the Den Chief will need to be successful. This training combines fun and enjoyment with an excellent character building experience. Participants will learn leadership, organization, how to work with adults to solve problems, and, most importantly, how to encourage and work with Cub Scouts while being a role model. Offered each fall and spring by Blackland Prairie District.

Oak Leaf Training
This is a District level course directed and taught by older Scouts for the purposes of modeling a boy-run campout and teaching camping skills. Offered each fall by Blackland Prairie District.

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
This course is an intense, 5 day, outdoor leadership training experience for troop youth leaders. Its principle function is to help Scoutmasters by training their top boy leaders in the skills of leadership. This course is a National BSA-developed course that closely parallels the material provided in the 21st Century Wood Badge training for adults. This course is offered by the Circle Ten Council. National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE)
This course is the ultimate in Leadership Training. It is run by youth, hand-picked from across the country representing some of our future's most outstanding leaders. Any Scout interested in staffing an NYLT course or aspiring to be his troop's SPL should consider attending NAYLE. For the first time ever, the 2010 courses are open to Venturers; therefore, men and women age 14-21 are encouraged to attend this outstanding course. This course is offered by the National BSA Council at all high adventure bases. NAYLE web page.
